Maika Garnica is an Antwerp-based artist who creates ceramic objects that are at the same time sculptures and instruments. For Hear Here, she joins forces with artist Nico Dockx. With their work Embedded Tonality they attempt to convert their own physicality into sounding tones. The lengths of their body parts are measured and translated into clay forms, which in turn serve as sound objects for musical interaction with other artists. Each object and length has its own tonality and resonates at specific frequencies. In the production of clay, clay blocks are often called ‘bodies’. This is because each block of clay has to travel a long way: pure clay is ‘contaminated’ with minerals, dirt and other clay particles via valleys and rivers, after which additives are added in the industry. A block of clay thus consists of different layers, components and ultimately tonalities, just like the human body and the various parts of this installation.
